A pastor in Kericho, Kenya holds out a collection basket for a family in need. It’s for a young widow with three small children, and only enough food and clothing for one.
A man walks up to the pastor, hands him two eggs, and says, “this is all I have.” The pastor says, “thank you,” with joyful tears in his eyes.
There are two things he knows about that man.
First, those are the last two eggs he has.
Second, the man walked seven miles on bare feet to give those eggs to someone in need.
In Kenya, free primary education has been widely adopted. The same cannot be said for high school education which is administered through boarding schools. The government is still unable to subsidize high school education, which can cost $600.00 per year per student.
When privation is measured in the number of eggs you can spare, an education is out of reach.
